Bel Mar Coin Show for 2016

It is almost time for this year’s Coin Show! Click on the Coin Show Tab above for details and to see our Flyer. If you live in Harford County you might have already seen a Flyer at a local Business or Coin Shop or Hobby Shop.

This year a Representative from the ANACS Coin Grading Organization will be at the Bel Mar Coin Show. This is part of a Big Promotion! The ANACS Reps are visiting Coin Shows all across the Country in celebration of their 40th Anniversary.

HOBO NICKELS

One of our Club Members recently purchased a Hobo Nickel from Wils Hobo Coins. If you click on the link it will take you to Wils Facebook Page and you will see some of his handiwork.

Here is an excerpt from Wikipedia:

The hobo nickel is a sculptural art form involving the creative modification of small-denomination coins, essentially resulting in miniature bas reliefs. The US nickel coin was favored because of its size, thickness and relative softness. However, the term hobo nickel is generic, as carvings have been made from many different denominations.

Due to its low cost and portability, this medium was particularly popular among hobos, hence the name.

There is a Non-Profit Hobo Nickel Society (OHNS) and they have a Guidebook listed on their website:  http://www.hobonickels.org/hobo_guidebook.html

If you do a little research on Google you will find lots of info on Hobo Nickels. And, if after doing some research you are intrigued, like our Club member was, you can find Hobo Nickels for Auction on eBay and on other sites.

Happy Collecting!

Metal Detecting & Treasure Hunting!

To kick off Spring 2015, Bel Mar Coin Club would like to introduce our Members and Blog Readers to Taylor Metal Detectors and The Freestate Treasure Club.

Spring is the start of metal detecting season, and Bel Mar Coin Club’s Vice President is Mr. Bob Taylor, owner and Proprietor of Taylor Metal Detectors and an active Member of the Freestate Treasure Club.

This article will introduce you to the sport and hobby of metal detecting and give you more information on these two organizations to help you with any questions you may have as you consider doing some metal detecting yourself. Or, if you have been doing some metal detecting or treasure hunting, and would like to learn more about the Craft, or get to know others like yourself who enjoy detecting, be sure to connect with the Freestate Treasure Club.

Bob Taylor is a Military Veteran of 20 years, and has spent a good number of years around metal detectors. In years past, anyone in the Maryland or Southern Pennsylvania area interested in metal detecting, or needing parts or supplies would have to travel to Gettysburg, PA to find a Shop.

Bob operates his Shop, Taylor Metal Detectors, at 8 Bramble Lane in Churchville, Harford County, Maryland 21028. He is open for business about 6 hours per day from Spring through Christmas. He primarily works “By Appointment Only”, but you can call the Shop or stop by during business hours if you happen to be in Churchville and need supplies or advice. Bob’s business covers large portions of Maryland / DC / Virginia / Pennsylvania, including Harford County, Cecil County, and the Eastern Shore.

He has built his business by word of mouth referrals and is known throughout the trade as an honest businessman, always willing to share knowledge and advice about metal detecting.

Speaking of The Eastern Shore, throughout history, there have been over 1400 ships that have sunk around the Chesapeake Bay and the Mid-Atlantic Coastal Region. Many of those ships had valuables or Coins as part of the cargo, and there are many stories of Treasures Found in our area. There is one area in particular known as “Coin Beach” for the Colonial Era coins that have been found there, especially after a storm surge or a hurricane passes the Mid-Atlantic region!

As mentioned above, Bob Taylor is an active member of The Freestate Treasure Club. Freestate has been in existence for 40+ years now, and is an exciting Club to join if you like Treasure Hunting and Metal Detecting!
